Telecommunications Announces 10 Most Relevant Companies

Winners have Business Models that are Redefining Telecom

Focusing on companies with the greatest potential to redefine telecommunications and networking for its worldwide service provider readership, Telecommunications magazine today announced the winners of its 10 Most Relevant Companies of 2006 awards.

The first-of-its-kind award for the communications segment identifies companies from within and outside the telecommunications segment whose business models have already changed the way customers consume products and services.

“To get the best view of the potential of the telecommunications frontier, you must look beyond traditional industry, business and geographic boundaries to identify the agenda-setters that are defining and redefining the competitive landscape,” said Bob Wallace, Editor-in- Chief, Telecommunications Magazine.

The winners include TiVo, NetFlix, Google and Red Hat, in addition to agenda-setting service providers AT&T, BT and Level 3 Communications. Intelligent infrastructure providers Alcatel and Juniper were selected from the infrastructure equipment market segment, while Microsoft was chosen from the networking software industry.

But how do you define “relevant?”

“Relevant companies matter because they represent and epitomize, something that will have a significant impact on the industry,” said Tom Nolle, President of CIMI Corp. and author of the June cover story for Telecommunications. “They aren’t just holding a place that would be filled by someone else were they to suddenly disappear, they are making a key trend happen. Sometimes it’s through clever strategizing, other times through unique market position.”

In an effort to evolve well beyond industry practices of selecting promising startups and technical innovators, all from within the telecom industry, Telecommunications worked with Nolle, a longtime columnist for and contributor to the magazine, to reach beyond boundaries to recognize companies that matter the most.
