IMS Buyers Not Ready for ‘Mega’ Vendor

inCode Analysis Shows Fragmentation as Interoperability Develops

Service providers will tend to spread network and application component purchases around among multiple IMS vendors rather than select a single “mega” vendor, according to an analysis by inCode, a wireless business and technology consulting firm.

The predicted trend is outlined in the “inCode IMS Global Deployments” matrix for the month ended January 30 and contains a touch of irony in the way IMS will eventually reach its end stage interoperability promise.

The “mix-and-match” approach, at least through early IMS implementations may force operators to “allocate time and resources for integrating multiple vendor technologies – a challenging task that IMS was intended to eliminate,” wrote P.K. Prasanna, inCode IMS technology lead.

Eventually, IMS equipment will be interoperable but “that vision may be two to four years away from reality,” Pasanna wrote.
