Asian energy supplier Meralco and Orga Systems have teamed up on a smart-grid pilot in the Philippines they claim is the country’s first experience of the technology.

The companies say that 40,000 customers will be connected to the smart grid during the initial pilot scheme, which will make use of Orga’s OS.Energy billing system.

“Orga Systems’ OS.Energy will play a crucial role in our smart grid initiative”, said Alfredo S. Panlilio, Meralco’s senior vice president and head of customer retail services. “We chose OS.Energy to offer real-time pricing and customer tailored prepaid energy tariffs, underlining our continued commitment to achieve improved customer service and satisfaction.”

Meralco (Pasig City, Philippines) chose the OS.Energy system after conducting a survey among customers to gauge preferences on the best alternative to standard postpaid billing arrangements.

According to the company, most customers cited the convenience and benefits of their prepaid deals with mobile-phone operators.

Orga Systems (Paderborn, Germany) claims the “meter-to-cash solution” chosen by Meralco allows the energy supplier to communicate with customers in real time about consumption, threshold and payment issues.

According to the vendor, it also offers tiered tariffs and can be used to remotely connect or disconnect customers, allowing Meralco to improve revenue management.

“We at Orga Systems believe that choice and convenience for energy consumers are critical for the long term success of the energy industry,” said Ramez Younan, the chief executive of Orga Systems. “We are proud of working with Meralco in its mission to deliver the best value in energy, products and services to its consumers through our innovative technologies in the utility industry.”
