M2M Zone Pavilion round-up

The CeBIT 2001 M2M Zone Pavilion, located at the center of Telematics Hall 7, has more than doubled in size since last year’s show, reflecting the already strong growth of this potentially explosive industry. With 14 of the most influential M2M names exhibiting, the M2M Zone is home to the manufacturers and service providers of the latest and most advanced machine-to-machine technology in existence.

With 14 of the most influential M2M names exhibiting, the M2M Zone is home to the manufacturers and service providers of the latest and most advanced machine-to-machine technology in existence.

Device Insight (Munich, Germany) will be exhibiting their “CenterSight” M2M Platform, a scalable web-based platform for remote device management. Ready-to-use applications are included, and the system features data logging, reporting, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, device management, and alarming.

According to the company, CenterSight monitors and manages any number of remote devices all over the world. Alarms are automatically detected, analyzed and forwarded to the responsible group of experts. Operational data is stored in central data bases and is available for analysis around the clock.

Telenor Connexion (Stockholm, Sweden) will be showcasing a number of solutions, from in-vehicle eCalling, to eHealth monitoring devices, to fleet management systems. The company will also be talking about their newly launched M2M Quality Program, which enhances the Telenor Connexion M2M service platform.

According to a representative, the new program allows for higher quality customer service, quicker time to market, less reiterations of the application design (faults may be corrected prior to release), more robust and cost efficient designs, and compliance to GSMA standards for security and signaling.

CINTERION (Munich, Germany) will be showcasing two new modules this year, the flagship “PH8” ruggedized unit, and their BGS2, the “world’s smallest” land grid array module for M2M. The PH8 uses HSPA+ for high bandwidth M2M communication in global markets. Native connectivity is available on 2G and 3G networks, and according to the company, offers a bridge to evolving 4G networks like LTE. The PH8 supports speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps for downloads and 5.76 Mbps for uploads.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, CINTERION’s BGS2 is an ultra-compact LGA module designed for applications like personal tracking units or medical monitoring. The company claims this is the world’s smallest LGA module that is also solderable, meaning the BGS2 could be effective for emerging trends such as near field communications, or even GPS microcontrollers.

Telit (Rome, Italy) is debuting the “Telit HE863” module, the first in a new series. The HE863 is an HSPA M2M module with an embedded GPS receiver and 22 GPIOs (General Purpose Input/Outputs) in a ball grid array (BGA) form factor. The HE863 measures 31.4 x 41.4 x 2.9 mm and supports quad-band GSM, GPRS/EDGE multislot class 33, 3GPP stack Release 6 and dual-band HSPA with 5.76 Mbps (uplink) and 7.2 Mbps (downlink).

The module is designed for data transmission devices with a long lifetime that are intended for long-term use (even after 2G network switch-off) and requiring high throughput. Potential applications include smart metering, healthcare, surveillance and tracking applications.

Wyless (London) will be showcasing products and services derived from its recent partnership with Interoute, a private fiber network with dedicated connections into each MNO. “Porthos,” Wyless’ M2M management platform, will also be highlighted.

The Porthos feature set includes real-time reporting, device and network management, provisioning, billing, usage alerts, and white labeling.

Other exhibitors include Orange, Skywave, KPN, CETECOM, Pacific Controls, ITIS Group, O2, KORE Telematics, and Digicom.
