M2M used in landslide detection for governments

On-Ramp Wireless (San Diego, Calif., U.S.A.), a provider of networking and location tracking equipment, on Tuesday announced it has partnered with Green Life Networks (GLN), a department of Gemtek (Hsinchu, Taiwan), a provider of wireless broadband solutions, to provide a landslide sensor for local, state and federal governments.

By deploying a group of sensors on hills with landslide potential, these sensors are able to detect minute movements to identify the formation of potential landslide.

By deploying a group of sensors on hills with landslide potential, these sensors are able to detect minute movements to identify the formation of potential landslide.

The sensor information is sent using On-Ramp’s Ultra-Link Processing (ULP) wireless system, which uses the same frequency as Wi-Fi to send small bits of information a distance of over 40 miles if necessary.  

“[The ULP] is used to provide a very Wide Area Wireless Network for transporting landslide sensor information from remote areas to central office servers,” says an On-Ramp spokesperson.  “Notification would be in days, hours, minutes of predicted landslide activity, depending on geologic conditions, number of sensors deployed, etc.”

GLN’s remote sensor platform will provide the landslide sensors, which are ideal for monitoring remote and hostile environments. The sensors are currently available for sale in the U.S., China and Taiwan.

According to an On-Ramp spokesperson, the service is currently being used by R&D organizations of Taiwan Universities and the Taiwan Department of Interior. No pricing information has been released.

“Landslide damage in Taiwan (due to torrential rainfall and typhoon) is a very big social safety problem that is being addressed by this application,” says the spokesperson.
