Kore to support smart pill technology for AdhereTech

Kore Telematics is to provide connectivity services to telehealth specialist AdhereTech in a deal that could lead to improvements in healthcare and reduced costs for healthcare providers.

AdhereTech (New York City, NY, USA) has developed what it calls a “smart pill bottle” that can automatically measure the number of pills in the bottle in real time and then wirelessly transmit this information to the cloud.

Patients who have forgotten to take their medication can then easily be notified via phone calls or text messages.

Under the arrangement between Kore (Alpharetta, GA, USA) and AdhereTech, the AdhereTech smart pill bottle will be preconfigured to send regular alerts via Kore’s network so that patients and healthcare professionals remain abreast of developments.

According to a December 2012 report published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, lack of medication adherence is responsible for 125,000 deaths, at least 10% of hospitalizations and a cost of between $100 billion and $289 billion annually to the US healthcare system.

“The healthcare industry is developing and deploying new M2M technologies that improve patient care, reduce costs and automate services,” said Alex Brisbourne, Kore’s president.

“Delivering reliable cellular and satellite connectivity across the globe for reliable health management services has been a significant focus, and Kore continues to be the M2M network of choice for companies like AdhereTech that are introducing innovative healthcare applications that are revolutionizing the industry,” he added.
