AT&T on Wednesday announced increased data rates for smartphone and tablet customers that will go into effect next week. The mobile operator is scrambling for new ways to address the broadband crunch after dropping its $39 billion bid for T-Mobile USA, which would have increased its spectrum by 62%.
Ofcom, the government-approved regulatory authority for broadcasting in the UK, last week set out a number of new proposals for making 4G mobile spectrum available to at least 98% of the UK population. These new proposals are to be put in place in time for the UK spectrum auction which is to be held at the end of the year.
Pakistan will hold an auction for its first license for third-generation (3G) mobile telecom services on March 29, an official at the country's telecoms authority said on Tuesday. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Mohammed Yaseen said the base price for the auction would be $210 million.
"We're expecting 10 to 15 potential investors in the initial bidding process," says Yaseen.
Telecom startup LightSquared is mounting a last-ditch effort to win U.S. regulatory approval for a new wireless network after being outmaneuvered by the GPS industry, which has cited numerous scenarios of interference problems that could interfere with planes and national security.
T-Mobile USA is finalizing a new business plan which may include a sale of its wireless towers to help pay for a network upgrade as it looks to rebuild its business after its failed effort to sell itself to AT&T Inc, top executives of the Deutsche Telekom unit said.
"T-Mobile USA is alive and we are back in fighting spirit," CEO Philip Humm told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, as he promise more details about the company's future strategy later this quarter.
Cox Communications on Friday announced that it will sell its 20 MHz Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses to Verizon for $315 million. The agreement does not include Cox's 700 MHz spectrum licenses, the company's Cox Wireless customer accounts or any other assets. The AWS spectrum license covers 28 million POPs.
France's telecoms regulator has received bids from all of the country's major operators for a second batch of higher-quality fourth-generation (4G) mobile licenses and will choose winners in the coming weeks.
