(Tokyo, Japan) Tuesday announced that U.S. and Japan companies have been selected as contractors for joint "Project" collaboration supporting a world-leading Smart Grid project on Maui, a Hawaiian island that will serve as the Project site. The Project will be spearheaded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization ("NEDO").
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) announced Monday that it has acquired the transmission and distribution (T&D) engineering capabilities of Patrick Energy Services (PES), a provider of performance-based transmission and distribution power system solutions. The acquisition will enhance SAIC's energy and smart grid services portfolio, adding additional T&D engineering services to the company's existing capabilities in a growing market.

The California Energy Commission awarded $4,643,200 for research projects to expand the state's smart grid, improve power plant pollution measurements, and conserve energy and water. The Commission's grants are leveraged by $392,709,016 of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds, and matching funds from the grant recipients. Funds for the six projects come from the Commission's Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program.

ETSI and T&D Europe announced today that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of ETSI standards for smart grid. Ericsson today entered an agreement to acquire Telenor Connexion's M2M (machine-to-machine) technology platform. The acquisition follows Ericsson's ambition to drive the market for M2M communication, adding valuable technology and know-how from eleven employees that will be transferred as part of the deal.
