Apple looking at cars, medical devices for growth: report

Apple Inc is looking at cars and medical devices to diversify its sources of revenue as growth from iPhones and iPads slow, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

Apple's (Cupertino, CA, USA) head of mergers and acquisitions, Adrian Perica, met with Tesla Motors Inc (Palo Alto, CA, USA) founder Elon Musk at the company's headquarters last year around the same time analysts suggested that Apple acquire the Model S electric car maker, the newspaper reported on Sunday, citing a source.

Remote monitoring in cardiology has growing appeal: IHS

Remote cardiac event monitors are becoming an increasingly attractive means of cutting expenditure in cardiology, with spending on cardiovascular disease expected to increase from a figure of $273 billion in 2010, according to IHS Research.

The market-research company says that high healthcare expenditure is rooted in inefficient systems, with medical staff’s time taken by administrative tasks, and that healthcare IT could help to improve efficiency.

AlertWatch gains FDA approval for patient-monitoring software

A startup backed by the University of Michigan says it has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin selling its patient-monitoring software to hospitals.

AlertWatch (Ann Arbor, MI, USA) – which says its goal is to help anesthesia providers monitor patients in the operating room – has developed software that aggregates data from physiological monitors, anesthesia records, lab results and medical history to produce a real-time display of a patient’s condition.

Telekom Austria ramps up telematics with industry-specific offers

Telekom Austria has expanded its portfolio of M2M offerings with the launch of six new telematics products aimed at specific industry sectors.

The products have been developed in partnership with Austrian telematics player CEplus (Timelkam, Austria) and will allow customers to monitor equipment through the use of sensors and a cloud-based software platform.

Digi International supports remote-monitoring for rail operators

M2M player Digi International is to support the rollout of new asset-tracking services for rail systems by long-standing partner OEM Technology Solutions.

Technology developed by OEM (Sydney, Australia) is used in more than 20,000 rail systems across 20 countries, but the company says that rail operators are still often faced with rail car downtime, leading to rising costs and falling revenues.

Infospectrum, T-Mobile launch roaming-free asset-tracking service

Asset-tracking specialist Infospectrum says it has teamed up with wireless operator T-Mobile US on the launch of a new set of location-based services that can be used globally without incurring roaming charges.

The partnership will allow users of Infospectrum’s (Agoura Hills, CA, USA) infoTRAK service to track asset movements across borders without being hit with roaming fees, but Infospectrum and T-Mobile (Bellevue, WA, USA) say they plan to market the improved service to asset owners and fleet operators worldwide.

SeeControl, Western Power partner on farm-equipment monitoring

SeeControl and Western Power have announced the availability of a new farm equipment monitoring service allowing farmers to track deployed assets.

Branded AgTracr, the service combines SeeControl’s (Redwood City, CA, USA) M2M cloud-platform capabilities with Western Power’s (Bakersfield, CA, USA) expertise in the farm-equipment sector.

Described as a “plug-n-play” solution, AgTracr is intended to support location tracking, event monitoring and fault reporting functionality.

Catena to provide M2M service for cold chain transportation

Businessman Alberto Marzan has launched a new company called Catena whose professed goal is to “solve logistical pain points throughout the $90 billion cold chain transportation industry”.

Marzan appears to be something of a newcomer to the M2M space, having previously worked as chief executive for organizations including the International Children’s Heart Foundation and Dominican Gold Coffee.

He is now to serve as chief executive and chair of Catena (Minneapolis, MN, USA).

Tele2 Netherlands to provide remote-monitoring service to Feenstra

Dutch telecoms operator Tele2 Netherlands says it has signed an agreement with energy services provider Feenstra that includes the provision of remote-monitoring services for security and alarm systems.

Among other things, Feenstra (Lelystad, Netherlands) installs gas-powered boilers in customer homes and the Tele2 service will ensure these systems can be read remotely by Feenstra employees.

Globalstar launches low-power chipset for remote monitoring

Satellite player Globalstar claims to have introduced the world’s lowest power-consuming satellite network chipset, saying the technology is ideally suited to a broad range of M2M devices and applications, including remote monitoring and tracking.

Because it is so energy-efficient, the STX3 – as it is called – is likely to be in demand among customers whose monitoring devices are used in remote and harsh environments.
