Having flourished in the past year, the home-automation sector is forecast to ship 8 million systems in the US in 2017, up from just 1.5 million in 2012, according to a new study from ABI Research.
The market-research company expects shipments to grow at a compound annual rate of 45.2% between 2011 and 2017, thanks largely to the activities of new entrants.
Despite the ailing economy and weak housing market, shipments of home-automation systems in the US have doubled in 2012 over last year’s levels.
Digi International on Tuesday introduced an enhanced version of the company’s ZigBee Smart Energy gateway. The gateway connects ZigBee Smart Energy devices from a Home Area Network (HAN) to an energy service provider via broadband and offers additional memory and processing power for over-the-air updates of connected Smart Energy devices.

Planned community Brambleton announced yesterday that it will be Verizon's first community in the U.S. to offer the Verizon Home Monitoring and Control Service making the concept of the "Connected Home" a reality. The service will enable Brambleton homeowners to lock doors remotely; see what's going on at home via networked cameras; and set, adjust and control lights, smart thermostats and appliances -- all by using a smartphone, a computer or through FiOS TV.
