Delta Cargo enables GPS for air shipments

Last week, Delta Air Lines announced an exclusive marketing agreement with OnAsset Intelligence, a provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless asset tracking solutions, enabling Delta Cargo customers to view GPS location information on its web site at deltacargo.com.

TomTom LIVE subscribers doubled in 2011

At the end of the year 1.5 million people around the globe were actively using TomTom’s LIVE Services, including TomTom HD Traffic, compared to 690,000 at the start of the year.

Currently, over 90% of TomTom’s (Amsterdam, Netherlands) automotive systems and 20% of its Portable Navigation Devices sold in Europe are equipped with LIVE Services.

Gemalto acquires M2M platform provider SensorLogic

Gemalto, a provider of digital security, today announced that it has acquired SensorLogic, a provider of cloud-based platforms for machine-to-machine (M2M) application development. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Fleet management company SkyBitz acquired for $42 million

Telular Corporation (Chicago, Ill., U.S.A.), a wireless M2M provider, last week announced the acquisition of SkyBitz, Inc. (Sterling, Va., U.S.A.), a provider of asset tracking equipment, for $42 million.  The deal is comprised of $35 million in cash and $7 million in shares of common stock.

Cinterion launches high-speed automotive M2M module

On Tuesday, Cinterion (Munich, Germany), a supplier of wireless modules for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, announced the launch of a high-speed automotive M2M module with a triple-diversity antenna design. According to Cinterion, the AH3 delivers communications across global 2G and 3G cellular networks for applications such as, onboard vehicle computing, internet access, fleet management as well as automatic eCall and emergency roadside assistance and integrated hands free calling.

TomTom makes fleet management app for smartphone

TomTom (Amsterdam, Netherlands) on Tuesday launched a smartphone application designed to provide customers with information about their vehicle fleet. The smartphone application, WEBFLEET Mobile, includes a detailed map which provides a view of the current traffic situation using TomTom’s real-time traffic technology, the TomTom HD Traffic. 

The technology allows customers to pinpoint the location of their fleet, obtain information on each vehicle's destination and estimated time of arrival, and gain trip data information such as mileage and timestamps, according to TomTom.

Once a largely overlooked sector of wireless, the machine-to-machine (M2M) market is fast becoming the darling of the wireless world, and a wide variety of new M2M applications are beginning to emerge. 

In fact, a recent study from Pyramid Research (Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A.) titled, “The Machine-to-Machine Market: A high-growth opportunity for MNOs,” predicts that the volume of cellular M2M subscriptions will increase almost fourfold between 2010 and 2016, from 72 million to 282 million.

Oil and Gas industry can now use GIS mapping with fleet tracking

Last week, NexTraq (Roswell, Ga., U.S.A.), a GPS fleet tracking and vehicle management company, announced fleet tracking capabilities for the oil and gas industry. Through its Web Services offering, an open platform that enables integration of fleet data with third party applications, oil and gas customers can align their geographic information system (GIS) mapping technology with fleet tracking technology. As a result, fleet managers can protect and leverage assets remotely with real-time data and reporting, according to the company.
