Virgin Media to trial world's fastest cable broadband

Testing speeds of 1.5Gb, 240 times faster than UK average

UK broadband provider Virgin Media is to begin testing internet speeds of up to 1.5Gb in east London. Using Virgin Media's unique cable network, the trials will begin this month in partnership with four companies in the vicinity of Old Street in London, dubbed the "Silicon Roundabout."

Telco Systems acquires ANDA Networks' product portfolio

Multi-service Carrier Ethernet access and demarcation solutions provider Telco Systems announced Wednesday that it has acquired the major assets and intellectual property of ANDA Networks in an all-cash transaction. The acquisition allows the company to offer a complete range of Carrier Ethernet access, edge, aggregation and mobile backhaul solutions.

ANDA is a provider of Carrier Class Ethernet and wireless backhaul platforms that deliver cost-effective MEF-certified Metro Ethernet services over fiber, copper and wireless backhaul networks. 

Fujitsu plans to bring fibre to 5 million homes and businesses in rural Britain

FTTH collaboration will use Cisco technology

Fujitsu today announced plans to work in collaboration with Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Cisco to deliver next generation internet services to 5 million homes in rural Britain.

The collaboration and subsequent Fujitsu build of a new super fast, fibre optic broadband network is alternative to BT Openreach (a division of the British telecommunications operator BT Group) and provides an opportunity for any community or local authority looking to access a proportion of the £530 million earmarked by the UK Government to drive investment in super fast broadband in rural communities.

GE Capital completes $591 million in telecom, media and technology financings in first quarter

GE Capital’s Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) financing business Monday announced that it has successfully completed 5 transactions totaling $591MM in financings in the first quarter of 2011.

“The first quarter for companies in our sector was active, in terms of both corporate financing and in financing private equity-backed companies," said Peter Foley, senior managing director of GE Capital, Telecom, Media and Technology.

China Mobile selects Spirent for fibre channel switch testing

China Mobile, China's largest mobile operator, has selected Spirent Communications to evaluate the performance of high density Fibre Channel Director Switches from major vendors in its evaluation lab. China Mobile will use Sprient's testing solution to ensure scalability, performance and reliability of storage area networks (SAN) for data centers in the selection of Fibre Channel switches.

Athena Wireless releases all-digital, multi-gigabit capacity mini radio

A data transfer problem of the near future can soon become a thing of the past, according to Athena Wireless Communication, Inc. The company's new A060 Mini Radio, "the world's first all-digital, multi-gigabit capacity, 60 GHz millimeter-wave radio which transfers data at fiber-like rates" could be "the perfect, cost-effective solution" to telecommunication operators' needs for backhaul capacity, Athena Wireless said in a press release Tuesday.

FiberTower selects DragonWave to deliver packet-backhaul services for major wireless carriers

Booming bandwidth demand for backhauling major wireless carriers 3G, 4G and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services has turned FiberTower, one of the largest alternative backhaul providers in the United States, to DragonWave Inc. products for high-capacity packet microwave. DragonWave's Horizon Compact is being deployed to support FiberTower's microwave-based packet backhaul services.

CeBIT 2011: Deutsche Telekom outlines fiber-to-the-home and LTE plans

10 German cities will be connected this year

Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany) discussed rollout plans for both its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and wireless LTE network expansions in a press conference today at CeBIT. As many as 160,000 households in 10 German cities will connect via FTTH this year.

The company claims download speeds in excess of 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 500 Mbps will be available.

Certain districts within Braunschweig, Brühl, Hanover, Hennigsdorf, Neu-Isenburg, Kornwestheim, Mettmann, Offenburg, Potsdam, and Rastatt will get FTTH in 2011.

Backhaul Optimizer Claims to Double Bandwidth for Voice, Data

New optimizer to be introduced at MWC

A new optimizer for mobile backhaul applications is said to double the amount of data standard networks can handle, allowing network operators to leverage existing networks for significant cost savings. The I-Gate 4000 from Dialogic Inc. (San Jose, CA USA) provides for voice- and data-stream optimization for 3G, 2G, and enterprise traffic, and is said to significantly improve the customer experience. The unit will be introduced at the upcoming Mobile World Congress In Barcelona.
