Global smart meter shipments grow 30% in 1Q12

According to a new report by IDC Energy Insights, a research-based advisory and consulting firm, the global smart meter industry shipped nearly 7.0 million meters in the first quarter of 2012. Shipments were up 28.8% year over year with shipments projected to grow 111.3% on an annual basis from 2011 to the end of 2012.

Sprint signs M2M agreements with Metrum, Tollgrade

On Monday, Sprint announced M2M agreements with Metrum Technologies, LLC, a developer of cellular-based communication for AMI and smart grid applications, and Tollgrade Communications Inc., a provider of network assurance services for the utility and telecom industries. 

Sensus invests $6.5 million for 15% stake in Navetas

Sensus, a provider of smart grid infrastructure technologies for electric, gas and water utilities, last week announced it has invested $6.5 million for a 15% stake in Navetas Energy Management in order to have exclusive rights to market its technology in the United States.


Navetas’s (Suffolk, U.K.) patented energy management software allows consumers to monitor the electricity consumption of discrete devices on their premise.

Canadian city saving up to $1 million annually with smart grid for water project

The City of Barrie, Ontario is saving $600,000 to $1 million annually since launching its smart grid for water project.  The project involved installing the Sensus FlexNet fixed-base wireless communications system and equipping all of its 42,000 residential water meters and 2,500 commercial and industrial water meters with radio transmitters, says Sensus.

Korea Electric Power Corp. to build smart grid

$1.8 billion investment by 2015

Korea Electric Power Corp. (Seoul), South Korea's number 1 electricity producer, has announced it plans to invest $1.8 billion (2 trillion won) over the next five years in a smart grid. The project is part of a larger government initiative to reduce carbon emission. The South Korean government has previously mentioned that state and private spending on smart grid infrastructure could reach nearly $21 billion by 2030.

CeBIT 2011: Pacific Controls CEO details M2M activity in Dubai

Smart city is far ahead of most

Dilip Rahulan, Chairman and CEO of Pacific Controls (Dubai, UAE), offered a number of key insights during an M2M Zone panel discussion yesterday at CeBIT. The company's home territory is a leader in the uptake of machine-to-machine connectivity.

Already, Pacific Controls has connected a whopping 60,000 buildings with M2M services, at an explosive rate of 120 buildings per day, according to Mr. Rahulan. He believes the overall infrastructure boom in Dubai is largely to thank for the echo-boom in M2M. As a result, projections for 2015 uptake have already been exceeded today.
