ILS Technology tops M2M security ranking: ABI Research

M2M platform provider ILS Technology has topped a new security ranking compiled by ABI Research, with Axeda and Sierra Wireless coming in second and third places respectively.

The assessment looked at eight security providers, comparing the companies on several criteria related to product implementation and vendor innovation.

Besides topping a ranking on security, ILS Technology (Boca Raton, FL, USA) also came first in the innovation category, followed by Axeda (Foxboro, MA, USA) in second place and Numerex (Atlanta, GA, USA) in third.

“The security aspects of their M2M platform, as well as any underlying security work and extensive research and development in the product and development category, namely in terms of enhancing M2M security, helped to drive those three to top the rankings,” said ABI Research.

On implementation, however, it was Axeda that came out top, with ILS Technology in second place and Sierra Wireless (Richmond, Canada) in third.

Those three organizations excelled because of their ability to generate revenues, their global reach and the variety of the vertical markets they serve.

Each also has an extensive network of commercial partners, noted ABI Research.

Perhaps explaining why only eight companies were considered, ABI Research points out that the M2M security market “is not crowded” and still offers opportunities for the development of applications and network connectivity.

“As critical applications in M2M become more popular, M2M vendors will increasingly incorporate security as a key feature,” said Michela Menting, a senior analyst with ABI Research. “The M2M network and application security markets offer plenty of potential, with the M2M market in full swing and the increasing number of opportunities will mean a surge in popularity.

With security set to play an increasingly important role in M2M, vendors that have a leading proposition in terms of regulatory and compliance security stand a good chance of dominating the market, says ABI Research, as critical sectors make greater use of M2M platforms.
