Gemalto announces M2M service for LTE networks

Gemalto, a provider of digital security, made a few major machine-to-machine announcements at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, including an end-to-end service for M2M and NFC content over LTE networks, and a plug-and-play M2M communication terminal from Cinterion.

Gemalto (Amsterdam, Netherlands) first announced the launch of an end-to-end service for the download and activation of mission critical applications including M2M, NFC and streaming multimedia content over LTE networks. The Gemalto Over-the-Air platform has already been used in a number of commercial LTE deployments, notably with NTT Docomo (Tokyo), as well as Metro PCS (Richardson, Texas, USA) and Verizon Wireless (New York) in the U.S, says Gemalto.


With LTE rollouts well underway and billions of connected devices forecast to be deployed in the near future, the wireless ecosystem is changing and this creates opportunities for mobile network operators to serve or act as service providers, says Gemalto. Mobile operators need a secure infrastructure and the ability to instantly reach their subscriber base in order to better meet service delivery requirements for growth opportunities.


Mobile operators can take advantage of subscribers’ natural renewal rhythm by anticipating the massive rollout of 4G and NFC services, and reduce their total cost of deployment with an early migration strategy to Gemalto’s Advanced UICC, ahead of time. Advanced Connectivity is compatible with existing networks and can be implemented as part of or ahead of an LTE roll-out.


Cinterion (Munich, Germany), a provider of cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication modules and a Gemalto company, also introduced a plug-and-play M2M communication terminal to connect any type of industrial applications and remote assets using cellular technology. It requires minimal integration and approval efforts, allowing for an accelerated implementation timeline, says Cinterion.


Cinterion’s BGS2-Terminal includes standardized industrial interfaces that enable easy deployment for different M2M market applications including remote monitoring and control, security solutions and building automation. The terminal’s extended temperature range and low power consumption can provide a long life span in out-of-the-way locations. For instance, the Cinterion terminal can be installed with solar panels enabling real time, two-way data communication that allows power companies to remotely monitor energy production and respond when repairs or maintenance are needed. The BGS2-Terminal helps keep equipment functioning at peak levels while reducing costly field service visits, says the company.


The BGS2-Terminal comes in two variants: RS-485 offering vertical-specific industrial interfaces for building automation and automatic meter reading; and RS-232 for general-purpose applications.
