Connected enterprise, big data to drive M2M in 2014, says Berg

The connected enterprise and big data analytics will be the two most important M2M trends next year, according to new research from Berg Insight.

In a new study, the market-research company says the number of mobile network connections used for M2M services will grow by 22% this year to reach 164.5 million, with East Asia, Western Europe and North America accounting for around 75% of the installed base.

In a new study, the market-research company says the number of mobile network connections used for M2M services will grow by 22% this year to reach 164.5 million, with East Asia, Western Europe and North America accounting for around 75% of the installed base.

By 2018, predicts Berg, the number of wireless M2M connections will have risen to 489.2 million, fuelled by developments in the areas of connected enterprise and big data analytics.

“The world’s best managed corporations across all industries are in the process of mastering how connectivity can help improving the efficiency of their daily operations and the customer experience”, said Tobias Ryberg, a senior analyst at Berg Insight. “Some of the best examples are found in the automotive industry where leading global car brands now offer a wide selection of connected applications, ranging from remote diagnostics, safety and security to LTE-powered infotainment services such as streaming music.”

According to Ryberg, the next step in the evolution of the wireless M2M market will be an increasing focus on making use of the enormous quantities of data being generated about vehicles, machinery and other types of device.

“Big data technology enables near real-time analysis of these data sets to reveal relationships, dependencies and perform predictions of outcomes and behaviors,” he said.

“The right data analytics tools and the expertise on how to use them can create massive value for businesses.”

Over the next 12 to 18 months, Berg expects to see a series of partnership announcements involving mobile operators and big data technology leaders and addressing business opportunities in this area.
