Three spectrum bands have been identified by European regulators for the introduction of Fifth Generation Mobile Network (5G) licensing, but they are not globally harmonised and not available throughout Europe. This note looks at the linkages between bands and generations and asks whether there are benefits or issues in coupling 5G so strongly in Europe to the availability of new frequencies.
The SIMalliance membership, which represents approximately 90% of the global SIM market, has reported a 5% year-on-year growth in its 2016 shipment volumes, with a total 4.9 billion units shipped during that period. This is the highest annual volume of shipment units reported yet by the organisation. SIMalliance members estimate that the total available global market for SIM cards also grew in 2016 by 2.8% to 5.45 billion units.
