In a blog post on its website, the analyst company says that enterprises will have to turn themselves into value-added players if they are to make the most of the M2M opportunity, and that their ability to manage data securely will be a crucial factor.

Enterprises will also have to be capable of turning the data they gather into “relevant information based on business rules”.

“Enterprises as well as network operators will need to embrace value-based approaches, which in turn mean that their underlying platform must possess the ability to identify and monetize value,” said Ari Banerjee, a senior analyst with Heavy Reading, in the blog.

“In order to shape their vision into reality, service providers need an underlying platform that is flexible and can adapt to changing market needs,” Banerjee added. “This platform should be able to provide enterprises with asset management and transactional insight capability that can help them launch innovative and aggressive business models.”

According to Heavy Reading, operators and enterprises will need to choose an application enablement platform allowing them to form closer relationships with their end customers if they are to elevate their value propositions for high-value customers.

Banerjee says that application enablement platforms will need to be data driven and focus on consumer applications if they are to maximize the revenue potential of M2M.

“Wireless operators, especially in mature markets, can increase their customer loyalty and profitability by putting visibility and control mechanisms in the hands of their enterprise users, who can then leverage those mechanisms to create a personalized experience for their end-customers,” Banerjee said. “Healthcare, automotive, smart home, home security are key areas where consumer applications will be critical for M2M adoption.”
