Backhaul, M2M, and IoT at CTIA’s Super Mobility Week

The Mobile Backhaul Pavilion features exhibits from innovative infrastructure and core access vendors, including AOptix, Clearfield, and Vitesse Semiconductor.

To put the backhaul challenge in context, consider data from Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, which forecasts that nearly five billion users and as many as 10 billion additional IoT and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices may be connected by 2018.

We recently featured an illuminating technical feature, articulating the challenge today’s carriers face in meeting the surging demand for mobile network capacity and coverage. AOptix’s Amit Khetawat makes the case that a new technology called Composite Optical-RF can deliver fiber-like performance in a wireless solution to meet the backhaul data transport needs of network operators through the use of Advanced Wavelength Diversity (AWD), which enables delivery of simultaneous redundant data over the diverse physical mediums of optical and millimeter wave radio.
