Application development platform specialist Axeda is to provide cloud-based services to software giant Microsoft in a deal it has heralded as a “significant milestone” for the business.

The agreement will see Axeda (Foxboro, MA, USA) support connectivity, two-way secure communications and machine data streaming from industry devices on behalf of Microsoft (Seattle, WA, USA).

Axeda claims its technology will help Microsoft analyze machine data to improve business processes.

“Our mission is to drive business growth and competitive advantage for our enterprise customers and partners through technology innovations that capitalize on the vast potential of machine data,” said Kevin Dallas, general manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft. “Axeda’s support of Microsoft’s platforms will help organizations translate machine data into business insights.”

The deal was described as a “significant milestone for Axeda” by Axeda chief executive Todd DeSisto, who was recently promoted to the role from that of chief financial and operating officer, and comes weeks after Axeda received a $12 million injection of funding from private equity firm JMI Equity (Baltimore, MD, USA) and others, including Indian software giant Wipro (Bangalore) and Japan’s Mitsui (Tokyo).

“We are honored that Microsoft has selected the Axeda Machine Cloud to support their devices and services strategy,” said DeSisto. “The addition of Microsoft to our customer portfolio is a catalyst to the acceleration of innovation within our products and overall mainstream market adoption.”

In May, Axeda was ranked as the leading M2M application development platform in a study carried out by Strategy Analytics.

The market-research company said Axeda stood out because of the scalability and flexibility of its platform, ecosystem of partners and range of consultancy and integration services.
