Automotive touch-screen sales to rise six-fold by 2019

Sales of automotive touch screens are forecast to rise from 5.8 million units in 2011 to 35.7 million units in 2019, according to a new report from IMS Research.

Most of the growth is likely to occur in the Asia Pacific, where IMS Research predicts that 17.9 million automotive touch screens will be sold in 2019.

Take-up is being fuelled by the introduction of more advanced systems, like MyFord Touch, that have similar functionality to smartphones and add significantly to driver satisfaction, says the market-research company.

Given safety concerns surrounding the use of touch screens, voice-command systems are beginning to play an important role in facilitating some of the more advanced functions.

“With voice technologies continuously improving, many vehicle manufacturers are now offering natural language speech recognition to create a Siri like experience in the car,” said Nimisha Patel, an analyst at IMS Research.

“Vehicle manufacturers are using these improved voice-command technologies to enhance the user experience and safety of a touch-screen head unit,” she added. “This is especially true in cases where some content is limited when driving over a certain speed.”

Despite the interest in advanced systems, more basic touch screens will continue to enter the market over the forecast period, says IMS Research, citing the example of the entry-level head unit on the MK7 Volkswagen Golf.

The basic touch-screen head units do not offer dynamic features and functions such as apps and connected services.
