Atos and Renault ramp up connected cars offering

Electronic payments specialist Atos Worldline says it is to provide a range of secure shopping services over the R-Link multimedia system used in Renault vehicles.

Under a new arrangement between the two companies, Atos (Bezons, France) will deploy services on Renault’s R-Link cloud services platform, using Orange Business Services (Paris, France) as a connectivity provider.

“As a long-standing partner of Renault [Boulogne-Billancourt, France], we are proud to support construction o the R-Link project, which aims to improve the experience of the driver and customer relations by implementing new contextual mobility services,’ said Marc-Henri Desportes, an executive committee member at Atos.

The collaboration will see Orange Business Services supply Renault with M2M SIM cards for inclusion in vehicles.

Data exchanged between the car and the Atos platform will then pass through a secure system using Orange’s mobile networks and those of its European partners, such as Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany), TeliaSonera (Stockholm, Sweden) and Telecom Italia (Milan, Italy) – all of which are members of the Global M2M Association formed to spur M2M market development.

Atos says that by drawing on the network of Orange Business Services, and taking advantage of Orange’s global roaming agreements, it will be able to extend the benefits of R-Link services to Renault customers throughout Europe.

The R-Link service features a large touch screen and an applications store open to external partners, says Atos, claiming the system’s ergonomics have been designed to make it the most secure system on the market for both driver and vehicle.
