Verizon Wireless expands M2M product suite

Verizon Wireless (Basking Ridge, NJ) and TeleNav, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) today announced the availability of TeleNav Asset Tracker. The product provides enterprise customers, utilizing location-based services (LBS) enabled wireless devices, with near real-time location information, as well as critical activity alerts, for cargo, delivery trucks or other mobile assets.

Smart grid proves feasible

A trial involving 25 household in the Hoogkerk district of the City of Groningen, Netherlands - PowerMatching City - has demonstrated that it is possible to create a 'smart grid' with a corresponding market model, using existing technologies. The system enables consumers to freely exchange electricity and keeps the comfort level up to par. This is the first time in Europe, and insofar as known worldwide, that the results of a live smart grid community are known at this technological scale.

Nokia chooses Qualcomm for Windows phone, seeks others

Nokia said on Friday it was negotiating with several chipset suppliers for its future Windows Phone models after deciding to use Qualcomm in its first smartphones using Microsoft's software.

Nokia announced in February it would use Microsoft's Windows Phone software in all of its smartphones.

Microsoft Windows Phone operating system (OS) is available only on Qualcomm's chips, but the U.S. software giant has said it was expanding the supplier base.

"The first Nokias based on Windows Phone will have the Qualcomm chipset," said a Nokia spokesman.

China Telecom in talks with Apple over CDMA iPhone

China Telecom Corp Ltd (Beijing China), the smallest of the country's three wireless carriers, has contacted Apple Inc to introduce the popular iPhone based on CDMA (code division multiple access) technology, Chairman Wang Xiaochu said today.

Larger rival China Unicom is the only operator in China, which has 886 million mobile phone users, to offer the iPhone so far. However, some analysts say China Telecom could be next after an exclusive agreement with Unicom expires this year.

e-books now outselling paper books

Amazon.com Inc said on Thursday that it now sells more digital e-books than paper books and that its recently introduced lower-priced Kindle e-reader is outselling other versions of the device.
Amazon, which does not divulge exact sales figures for the Kindle or e-books, said that for every 100 print books it has sold since April 1, it has sold 105 e-books. That includes both paperback and hardcover books, but excludes free downloads.

Last month, Amazon introduced a Kindle for $114, or $25 less than its next most expensive version, featuring advertising.
