LightSquared finally submits GPS report to FCC

LightSquared (Reston, Va.), a wholesale-only integrated 4G-LTE wireless broadband and satellite network, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $265 million in additional financing. The capital was drawn from both existing investors as well as new investors in the company.
According to LightSquared, the additional financing will be used for general corporate purposes, which includes constructing its 4G-LTE wholesale network. Over the last 12 months LightSquared has raised over $2.3 billion.

Philip Falcone’s Harbinger Capital has already put $3.1 billion into the company.

Spain holds auction for mobile licenses, hopes to generate $2 billion

Spain kicked off its first-ever auction of mobile telecoms licenses on Wednesday in an internet contest the government hopes will generate at least $2.05 billion.

Eleven service operators applied and were granted the right to enter the auction, which is crucial in distributing enough mobile frequencies to allow operators to meet future customer demand for data use on smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft puts Office software in the cloud

Microsoft Corp (Redmond, Wash.) made its biggest move into the mobile, Internet-accessible world of "cloud" computing on Tuesday, introducing a revamped online version of its hugely profitable Office software suite.

Microsoft is putting its applications -- including Outlook email, Excel spreadsheets and SharePoint collaboration tools -- into an online format so that customers can use them on a variety of devices from wherever they can get an Internet connection.

Nokia, Siemens fails to secure investors

Handset manufacturer, Nokia (Espoo, Finland) and Siemens AG (Munich, Germany), an engineering company, failed to secure a deal from investors for a controlling stake in their joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

On Monday Nokia claimed there were "multiple options" for its joint venture with Siemens AG, despite reports that talks to sell a controlling stake in the venture had failed.

iControl raises $50 Million to accelerate broadband management

iControl Networks (Palo Alto, Calif.), a broadband home management company, last Monday announced the close of over $50 million in Series D funding, bringing total investment in the company to more than $100 million.

iControl's Series D round was led by energy and clean tech investors. Other investors in this round of funding include Cisco, Comcast Ventures, Intel Capital, Charles River Ventures, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers iFund, Rogers Communications and Tyco International, the parent company of ADT Security Services.

Survey: 75% of mobile operators to launch LTE networks

According to a study released on Monday by BroadSoft, Inc, VoIP communication provider, more than 42 % of global Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are currently deploying or trialing LTE, and an additional 34.2 % plan LTE network rollouts in the future. The survey, conducted by analyst firm MobileSQUARED on behalf of BroadSoft, identified strategies and perspectives of leading mobile operators worldwide about LTE, Unified Communications and Rich Communications Suite services in an all-IP environment.

Juniper provides Ethernet switching to large Chinese television company

Juniper Networks (Sunnyvale, Calif.), a networking systems provider, on Monday announced that Youku.com Inc, a Beijing-based Internet television company, has deployed a new Ethernet switching infrastructure running on Juniper’s operating system in its data center and Content Delivery Network.

Google abandons smart grid project

Last week Google Inc. (Mountain View, Calif.) decided to discontinue its smart grid project due to lack of users. Google PowerMeter, a free energy monitoring tool, was launched by Google in 2009 by its philanthropic arm, Google.org.

On the Google PowerMeter website, all existing users are asked to export their data by September 16, 2011.

The smart grid project allowed customers to view their home’s energy consumption from an online service center. According to Google, having access to smart meter information helps consumers reduce their energy use by up to 15%.

39 million security apps to be connected to European cellular networks by 2015

According to a new research report from analyst firm Berg Insight (Gothenburg, Sweden), shipments of wireless M2M modules for security applications in Europe are forecasted to grow from 2.4 million in 2010 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 55 % to reach 21.4 million in 2015. At the same time, the number of tracking devices and wireless alarm systems monitored from an alarm receiving center will grow from 7.0 million in 2010 at a CAGR of 41 % to reach 39.2 million by the end of 2015, according to Berg.

New report shows slower satellite growth in 2010

The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) last Monday released its 2011 State of the Satellite Industry Report, showing a 5% growth in overall world satellite industry revenues in 2010. Global 2010 revenues for the satellite industry totaled $168.1 billion, for an 11.2 % average annual industry growth rate over the past 5 years.

More than 80 satellite companies, both SIA members and non-members, were surveyed to assess the performance of four satellite industry sectors: satellite services, satellite manufacturing, launch, and ground equipment.
