Spirent TestCenter Live helps service providers in Ethernet mobile backhaul migration

On Monday Spirent (Sunnyvale, CA) announced enhancements to its Spirent TestCenter Live service assurance tool, designed to enable service providers to align service assurance costs with new Ethernet service business models. According to Spirent, as service providers make the transition from Time-division multiplexing (TDM) to Ethernet in the backhaul, there are operational challenges of managing these new networks.

Sprint offers AT&T spectrum solution without merger

AT&T Inc (Dallas, Texas) could greatly expand its network capacity for a fraction of the cost it plans to shell out to buy T-Mobile USA, Sprint Nextel (Overland Park, Kan.) said on Monday.

Sprint, a vocal opponent of the deal, said it would present the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) later on Monday with a technical analysis detailing the actions AT&T could take to improve its network without acquiring T-Mobile USA.

Smart911 Program spreading through U.S.

Rave Mobile Safety (Framingham, Mass.), a provider of safety software, on Tuesday announced that its Smart911 technology is seeing nationwide adoption, including numerous municipalities in over 13 states. Smart911 allows citizens to enter personal information online, which is then automatically available to a 9-1-1 call taker, in the event they call 9-1-1.

South America smart grid market to reach 104.5 million smart meters by 2020

Northeast Group, LLC (Washington, D.C.), a research and consulting firm, on Tuesday released its South America Smart Grid Market Forecast (2011-2020) which projects the smart meter market alone will reach 104.5 million meters and $25.1 billion by 2020.

Other smart grid technologies – including distribution automation – will also grow quickly in the region. According to Northeast Group, Brazil will be first to begin large-scale deployments. Chile and Argentina will be next to follow, with other countries set to launch deployments in the latter half of the decade.

New Zealand Telehealth Forum established

On Tuesday it was announced that the New Zealand Telehealth Forum has been established to promote the use of telehealth in healthcare delivery and is timed to maximize the benefits of the Government’s broadband program.

The National Health IT Board has funded the establishment of the Forum. Members of board include practicing clinicians, senior DHB managers, researchers and consumer representatives. The CEOs of the Health IT Cluster and TUANZ (representing health ICT suppliers and telecommunications users) are also on the Forum Board.

inthinc uses telematics to prove driver innocence in rollover accidents

inthinc Technology Solutions Inc.(Salt Lake City, Utah), a telematics company centered on fleet management, and Southwestern Nevada LLC (Mansfield, Texas), an oil transportation company, have recently worked together to disprove driver negligence in a string of rollover accidents. Using crash reconstruction technology capabilities included in the inthinc tiwiPro(TM) driver safety technology, Southwestern Nevada LLC avoided an insurance termination.

Smart Meter Manufacturers Association of America formed by industry suppliers

To increase awareness on smart meters on Monday it was announced that a new industry group, the Smart Meter Manufacturers’ Association of America (SMMAA), has been formed.

Smart-Meter makers, Echelon, Elster, GE, Itron, Landis+Gyr and Sensus are the founding members and representatives from each company reside on the board, with a rotation in the presidency. According to SMMAA, meters from these manufacturers represent nearly 100 % of the installed base of electric meters currently deployed in the United States and Canada, and 35 million of which are considered “smart.”

Sprint launches a self-service portal offering for M2M devices

Sprint (Overland Park, Kan.) on Tuesday announced the launch of Sprint Command Center, a centralized, self-service portal that controls M2M devices and services, as well as allows businesses to control provisioning, billing, management and application development of their own M2M devices.

Telenor Connexion expands into Japan, Malaysia

Telenor Connexion (Stockholm, Sweden), an M2M service provider, on Tuesday announced the expansion of its business development team in Japan and Malaysia.

The Tokyo office established in 2010 is now expanded with a local team. Kentaro Ohshida has been appointed Account Liaison Director and contact point for the Japan office. Ohshida worked with a major Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer for almost a decade.

Option's wireless embedded modules now certified by AT&T

Option (Leuven, Belgium), a wireless technology company, on Tuesday announced the data certification of its wireless embedded modules by AT&T (Dallas, Texas). These embedded modules are designed for a variety of mobile devices including tablets, consumer electronic devices, netbooks, routers and notebooks; and fit a range of high bandwidth M2M applications such as digital signage, automotive and security cameras.
