Top 10 mobile applications of 2011

Do you want to skype with a friend halfway around the world?  Do you need to monitor your blood sugar levels?  Did you forget your airplane ticket in the car on the way to the airport?  Don’t worry, there’s an app for that.

Today, there seems to be a mobile application for just about anything.  In a recent report by Distimo (Utrecht, Netherland), a company focused on analyzing app store markets, it found that nearly all app stores more than doubled the number of available apps in 2011. Combined, there are over one million mobile applications offered through smartphones and tablets.

Below is a list of the top 10 mobile apps of 2010 based on amount of downloads.  The list takes into account both free and paid versions of the applications.

Of the top 10 most downloaded apps in 2011, three are social media and four are games.  According to the report, the games category is the largest app category in most app stores, and subsequently generated the most downloads.  According to Distimo, the three largest stores for games are the Apple app store for the iPhone (79,000 games), the Android app story (45,000 games) and the Apple app store for the iPad (28,700 games).
