Sprint, Techstars back mobile health startups

US operator Sprint has teamed up with Techstars to provide support to ten mobile-health-related startups from Australia and the US.

The companies will operate from Kansas City over a three-month period as part of an intensive mentor-drive program backed by Techstars (Boulder, CO, USA), which provides seed funding to startups.

They will have access to technology experts from Sprint (Overland Park, KS, USA), as well as regional healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs from around the country.

Each one will also receive up to $120,000 in funding.

Sprint says the program will culminate in June when the ten companies will have to make presentations to an audience of investors and business leaders from around the US and the Kansas City community.

“The quality of the companies in our Sprint Accelerator program is outstanding,” said Kevin McGinnis, the vice president of Sprint division Pinsight Media+, who has taken a leadership role in expanding and strengthening the company’s work with startups. “Sprint is proud to be part of the innovation movement in the healthcare space.”

“The impact these companies can have on so many people in both the technology and healthcare industries is tremendous,” he added.

The startups comprise Akibah (San Jose, CA), Fitbark (New York City, NY), Lifeline Response (Chicago, IL), Medicast (Palo Alto, CA), Prime (San Francisco, CA), Sickweather (Baltimore, MD), Symptom.ly (Salt Lake City, UT), Tenacity Health (Boston, MA) and Yosko (Cambridge, MA) from the US, as well as Australia’s Ollo Mobile (Brisbane).

All are developing solutions that encompass hardware, software platforms, transformative services, big data and mobile applications, said Sprint.

“The Sprint Accelerator is the first mobile health-focused accelerator for Techstars, and we are thrilled to be in Kansas City bringing together these ten startups to collaborate and grow over the course of the next three months,” said David Cohen, founder and chief executive of Techstars. “The mix of entrepreneurs and the strong roster of mentors – Techstars, Sprint and the health care community – promise to make this a truly great program.”
