Rogers Communications and Axeda Corporation on Tuesday announced an alliance that will accelerate the deployment of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions in Canada. As of Thursday, businesses and developers across Canada will have access Axeda’s M2M Platform to build and roll-out enterprise M2M applications for connected products in Canada.
The Axeda Platform is an M2M data integration and application development platform with infrastructure delivered as a cloud-based service. By providing a secure platform, the creation of M2M applications is accelerated as businesses focus on developing their application versus time consuming platform builds, says Axeda (Foxboro, Mass., USA).
According to an Axeda spokesperson, significant cost and complexity is taken out of the M2M solution development and delivery process by providing a hosted infrastructure that enables companies to focus on building applications rather than the underlying foundation.
According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), shipments of smart connected devices - including PCs, tablets and smartphones - reached 916 million units and surpassed $489 billion in revenue in 2011. The Canadian M2M market is further set to grow as businesses increasingly look to deploy connected services across healthcare, transportation, oil and gas, retail, manufacturing, government and financial services industries, says Rogers Communication (Ontario, Canada).
“Through our alliance with Axeda, we are going beyond connectivity, providing options for our customers and Rogers Data Alliance Members that make it easier and more affordable for them to develop and deploy M2M solutions across connected devices,” said Mansell Nelson, vice-president of M2M at Rogers Communications.
This is Axeda’s first time working with Rogers. According to an Axeda spokesperson, the company chose Rogers based on its strategic vision, as well as its number of real M2M projects currently in play.
Axeda has similar alliances with Sprint and Verizon in the U.S., as well as with Telenor Connexion in Europe. In January the company also announced a strategic reseller agreement with AT&T. According to the spokesperson, Axeda does plan to develop other strategic agreements, similiar to AT&T, with wireless carriers in other regions.
