Panasonic develops new wireless tech for sensor networks

Japan’s Panasonic claims to have developed a new wireless communications technology specifically intended for M2M sensor networks.

According to the company, the technology can detect multiple wireless standards that differ from one country to another or between applications.

By sharing software and reducing the amount of signal processing, the new technology integrates multiple communication modes, says Panasonic (Osaka, Japan) – meaning engineers can design and develop modules that are small but will operate for extended periods of time.

The company’s intention is to simplify the process of connecting disparate devices as well as accelerate the spread of wireless sensor networks.

Panasonic adds that its “multi-mode” system can support up to three different wireless modes at a time and can massively reduce energy consumption of the whole module.

Indeed, it reckons the module will use around 55% less power with the new technology than using Panasonic’s existing products.

Panasonic says it holds 26 Japanese patents and 19 overseas patents – including those still pending – related to the technology, and that its development received support from

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Panasonic is to kick off a field test of the technology at the University of Tokyo this week.
