LTE service offerings heat up at CES

Verizon announces nearly 50 partners, MetroPCS slashes rates

Verizon Wireless (Basking Ridge, NJ, USA) has announced a whopping four dozen technology partners, whose work will be highlighted inside the company's booth at International CES 2011 starting tomorrow. More than 40 new solutions will be on display, each designed to take advantage of their LTE network and its characteristic high speed and low latency.

Connected home, gaming and entertainment, and consumer device applications will be featured. The company also plans to exhibit "new ways to do mobile collaboration for retail, customer service and other industries." Remote security and health care options have also been promised, along with a car which will reveal different applications coming from the automotive industry.

The company credits their new Waltham, Massachusetts "LTE Innovation Center" with many of the innovations on display. Executives and partners will hold a press conference tomorrow morning which is expected to feature new 4G Android-base devices.

Meanwhile, MetroPCS (Richardson, TX, USA) has dropped the price of its 4G service plans to compete with Verizon. The baseline plan clocks in at $40 per month for unlimited voice, text, and 4G web browsing; while the $50 and $60 plans include value-added features like turn-by-turn directions, "premium" text messaging, on-demand video channels, etc.

The new 4G LTE rate plans are available in nine metropolitan areas: Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento, and San Francisco. MetroPCS plans to expand its 4G LTE services into more metropolitan areas in 2011, including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.

Verizon currently offers LTE in 39 markets, and sells 5GB of data at $50 per month or 10GB of data at $80.
