AT&T wins connected-cars deal with Volvo

US telecoms giant AT&T continues to set the pace in the connected-cars industry, having just announced a deal with Volvo to provide wireless connectivity services in vehicles sold in the US and Canadian markets.

The multi-year agreement will see AT&T (Dallas, TX, USA) equip Volvo’s (Gothenburg, Sweden) US 2015 model year with its Sensus Connect embedded infotainment service, while Volvo customers in the US and Canada will also have access to Volvo On Call – which allows car functions to be accessed remotely and also notifies emergency services in the event of a crash.

Volvo plans to start selling vehicles that include AT&T’s wireless connectivity services this summer.

The latest deal builds on agreements AT&T already has in place with some of the world’s biggest carmakers, including General Motors (Detroit, MI, USA), Volkswagen (Wolfsburg, Germany) and Tesla (Palo Alto, CA, USA).

The Volvo service will use AT&T’s Single SIM platform to provide coverage in the US and Canada, says the operator, allowing Volvo to manage wireless device deployment and operations using advanced diagnostic tools and smart alerting.

The service will also be based on the AT&T Control Center – the M2M service management platform that has been developed for the operator by Jasper Wireless (Mountain View, CA, USA).

“We expect Volvo customers will be delighted to have these services on board, and we’re committed to working with Volvo Cars to give their customers a unique and valuable service,” said Chris Penrose, senior vice president of emerging devices for AT&T Mobility.

“Our Single SIM will make it easy for Volvo customers to have high speed wireless connectivity in the U.S. and Canada.”

AT&T has made the connected-cars market a priority as it looks new growth opportunities that will offset the decline in traditional markets like voice and text-messaging services.

In January, the operator opened a new facility in Atlanta dedicated to researching connected-cars technologies and it has also launched a service branded AT&T Drive, allowing carmakers to select from a range of connectivity features they would like to include in their vehicles.
