Broadband Access
Broadband stimulus: an enabler, not the end-all be-all
Package could spur new flow of government and commercial funding
by Sean Buckley
Rich Wonders, Vice President of Strategic Marketing for Alcatel-Lucent's Americas region and John Cinelli, President, Cinergy MetroNet, an early FTTH pioneer operating in Indiana both address the following questions in this audiocast:
What's the right broadband speed should be considered?
There’s a lot of talk about the notions of underserved and unserved markets. How do you define these terms relative to getting broadband access?
Fiber, as we all know, is the end all for broadband, but the reality is that it’s not going to be cost-effective for every carrier to deploy. Do you think we’ll see a continued mix of both DSL and fiber in rural areas?
Do you believe that the proposed broadband stimulus package of US$6-9 billion is enough?
Alcatel-Lucent recently launched its “Broadband for All” program offers telecom providers a turnkey service to apply for government funding including grant application assistance, etc. Can both of you talk about that program and the effect it could have in helping service providers get through the mire of regulations to apply for stimulus funding?
What sort of economic impact do you expect the Obama administration's stimulus to have with your rural customers and their serving areas?
Should local schools be given a priority to get more of the stimulus money to enhance communications between teachers and parents and to enhance the learning process?
