Voting, vending telemetry leverage near-ubiquitous platform

Frank Bernhard, research director and technology economist for Omni Research, addresses the following questions in this audiocast:

Verizon Wireless as of September 2008 reported that its subscribers sent more than 5 billion text messages. What do you believe is driving this ongoing trend and spike in SMS?

One of the other intriguing things about SMS is that a big portion of the traffic is SPAM messages; however, legacy SMSCs weren’t built to handle SPAM or the overwhelming growth of SMS. How can operators overcome the limitations of legacy SMSCs while creating a better experience for their customer base?

Another trend we are seeing driven in the SMS service realm is that it can be used for other purposes including Machine to Machine-like applications such as vendor machine Telemetry. What's your take on how that is playing out?

What about using SMS for voting?

With all of these new applications coming on line, how will the Smart Phone fit into the equation?

Europe's largest telecom and entertainment group, Vivendi, raised its profit targets on the back of forecast-beating first-half results and reassured investors on its acquisition strategy, lifting its flagging stock.

The market for short range wireless ICs is forecast to expand this year; total shipments of Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, 802.15.4 and Wi-Fi ICs will increase approximately 20% compared to 2009. “Bluetooth ICs still lead the short-range wireless IC market,” says ABI Research industry analyst Celia Bo. “Unit shipments are expected to exceed 58% of the total short-range wireless IC shipments in 2010.

3PAR claims widespread uptake for VMware 'vSphere' service -- August 31, 2010
Today at VMworld 2010, 3PAR announced that cloud computing market leaders in the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) segments have combined the 3PAR InServ Storage Server with VMware vSphere to build cloud infrastructures for their shared, virtualized "utility" service offerings.
