Telefonica and Microsoft expand e-mail possibilities

Windows Live Hotmail added to Movistar Mail

The 12 million users of Windows Live Hotmail in Spain can now enjoy the Microsoft e-mail solution on their mobile device thanks to Movistar Mail, the mobile e-mail service from Telefónica as a result of the agreement between Telefónica and Microsoft. With this agreement, Telefónica becomes the only operator in the market to facilitate the real-time access to Hotmail e-mail accounts on a wide range of mobile devices. Thus, the 12 million users of Hotmail, following this alliance, can enjoy their mail by using their mobile device.

Mail Movistar is a “push e-mail” service based on the new generation of products from ‘SEVEN’, which enables e-mails from Windows Live Hotmail to be directly received on the phone, without having to manually synchronize the inbox, or press “send and receive”.

The new version of Mail Movistar works on a wide range of devices running the Windows Mobile operating system. Currently, the list of devices approved for the new version includes the HTC Touch Dual, HTC Touch Find, HTC Touch Diamond, Samsung i780, Samsung i200 and Samsung Omnia. The list will be expanded gradually. In addition, Mail Movistar is also compatible with other devices such as Nokia E71, Nokia E51 and Nokia E66. To enjoy this service, two types of plans are available: a flat fee plan (€7.5 to €15 per month, depending on the customer's contract) and another reduced rate plan (€6 per month with a discount of 50 percent for the first three months).

And Facebook too

In a further development, Telefónica and Facebook have reached a global agreement allowing the telecommunications operator to seamlessly integrate access to Facebook’s mobile service and applications from all of Telefónica’s mobile portals. This agreement will expand the current relationship between the companies in the UK into a worldwide agreement. Facebook is a social networking website and one of the most visited sites in the world, with more than 100 million registered users. This agreement will enable Telefónica’s more than 171 million mobile subscribers to stay in touch with their friends on Facebook and take part in one or more social networks, depending on their work, academic, or leisure interests, at any time and from anywhere.

Incorporation into the agreement will take place in two stages, both for Europe and for Latin America. The first stage includes Ireland, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Colombia. The second encompasses Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Central American countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Facebook facility has been available on Telefónica’s O2 network in the UK for several months. Every participating country may include a link in the browsing menu of its mobile handsets to Facebook's mobile service, allowing customers to send digital content (photos and videos) through integrated MMS services (currently, more than 24 million pictures are uploaded to Facebook each day).

While global telecom operators, systems integrators, and enterprises wrestle with Machine-to-Machine, they may struggle to contain a tide that has only just begun to rise. The power of supply chain automation, ubiquitous connectivity, and pervasive computing are so strong, we may already have traversed a threshold into a radically new paradigm in the communications industry, one in which waves of innovation, new economies of scale, and sheer business logic will prevail. While no crystal ball can show us the future of network evolution, we can revisit milestones of technological progress and shed light on the path ahead.
