In this latest Audiocast, Telecom Engine Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks to David Foote, CTO of Hitachi Telecom about new developments in next-gen PON technology and how cable operators are taking an increasing interest in deploying fiber to the X.
Foote speaks to the following questions in this interview:
• I was speaking to a small independent operator in Oregon named Canby Telephone last week who said one of the drivers to build a Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network was to transform themselves into an entertainment company. Do you see more of your client base looking at FTTH as a way to transform themselves from the old telephone company and into to a more media-centric provider?
• Regionally speaking, what does the overall landscape for FTTH look like going into 2009?
• Outside of North America, it looks like Europe, which has trailed the rest of the world in FTTx deployments, is gaining momentum with France leading the charge with 118,000 new subscribers and Norway bringing on 69,000 new subscribers. How is the European market shaping up for FTTx?
• Despite their dedication to DOCSIS, it appears the cable industry is more closely examining fiber-to-the-home through the advent of the emerging RF over Glass (RFoG) standard. Since emerging as a concept in the SCTE and other related standards bodies, how do you see the cable industry responding to the RFoG movement?
• Along with RFoG, there’s a lot of hype and talk about 10 Gbps PON and WDM-PON. Can you share with us your thoughts on these next-gen FTTx developments?
