While it's clear that fiber to the x in one shape or another will be the future last mile network, today's reality is that copper-based DSL, including emerging standards such as VDSL2 and bonding, continue to dominate the last mile market.
In this Audiocast, Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks with Robin Mersh, Chief Operating Officer, Broadband Forum, about the upcoming BroadbandSuite Release 3.0 and other objectives.
Mersh answers the following questions in this Audiocast:
• What's driving the continued increase in DSL subscribers and do you believe we’ll see more with the advent of VDSL2 and ADSL2+ deployments?
• During your first meeting as the newly minted Broadband Forum, one of the topics at hand was Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC). With many service providers seeing a blurring of the lines between mobile and fixed voice access, what role will the Broadband Forum take in developing standards and frameworks to help facilitate further FMC growth?
• One of the key issues on everyone's mind these days is the economy. Do you think this will have an effect on the way carriers expand their service initiatives and how subscribers sign up for new broadband service packages or is it still too early to tell?
• Finally, the Broadband Forum is going to officially announced the details of Broadband Suite Release 3.0 during the Telco TV show. Can you give us a sneak peak of the standard and its elements?
