In this Audiocast, Telecom Engine Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks with Stephen Rettenberger, Director of Product Marketing for ADVA Optical Networking about the company's move to offer WDM-PON solutions for telco's last mile traffic backhaul applications.
Rettenger addresses the following questions in this Audiocast:
• From your perspective, how is the overall FTTX market shaping up in terms of penetration?
• GPON, EPON and GPON obviously dominate the FTTH landscape, but increasingly we’re hearing more about emerging next-gen PON methods, including 10 Gbps PON and WDM PON. To start, what are the differences in these approaches and where is the industry in terms of trials and interest?
• In the U.S. FTTX is dominated by the two large carriers AT&T and Verizon with their respective FTTH and FTTN approaches. For carriers that have an existing base of PON in their networks, how can they take advantage of WDM PON without a major forklift upgrade?
• Speaking of advanced PON solutions, ADVA itself is throwing its hat into this ring with its own WDM product. What drove ADVA, a company well known in the optical space, to develop a WDM PON solution?
• Are you seeing a demand and interest from carriers for WDM and advanced PON solutions?
