In this Audiocast, Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks to Steve Shaw, Associate Vice President of Marketing for Kineto Wireless, about the emerging FMC trends.

Shaw addresses the following questions:

    • There’s obviously a lot of hype and opportunity for FMC. At this point in 2008, what’s your take on where the market is and how is UMA stacking up against other solutions like Voice Call Continuity (VCC), etc.?

    • One of the other areas service providers and the industry talks about is whether or not you need to have IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to enable FMC. Do you believe the two have to go together or can service providers make incremental investments to deliver enhanced services over existing wireless and wireline infrastructure?

    • Outside of AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which have their own wireless networks, other ILECs like EMBARQ and Qwest don’t. How can these wireline-centric operators make good on an FMC play?

    • Alternately, we’re seeing wireless-centric operators like T-Mobile now chasing after the home market with its new @Home service, which allows T-Mobile users to get home phone service for US$10. Do you believe we’ll see more of these so-called Over the Top (OTT) voice players?

    • No discussion about wireless is complete without mentioning the femtocell. How is the femto market shaping up from your point of view?

While global telecom operators, systems integrators, and enterprises wrestle with Machine-to-Machine, they may struggle to contain a tide that has only just begun to rise. The power of supply chain automation, ubiquitous connectivity, and pervasive computing are so strong, we may already have traversed a threshold into a radically new paradigm in the communications industry, one in which waves of innovation, new economies of scale, and sheer business logic will prevail. While no crystal ball can show us the future of network evolution, we can revisit milestones of technological progress and shed light on the path ahead.
