If you’re a telco interested in squeezing more juice out of your existing copper plant, you have a bevy of choices at your fingertips, including everything from traditional bonded T1, VDSL2 with bonding or more exotic technologies such as Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) with Discrete Multitone (DMT). Service providers are finding there’s still a good amount of utility left in copper for internal uses such as DSLAM backhaul, but also to deliver enterprise business services and wireless backhaul services. In this Audiocast, Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks to former ADC alumn Lonnie Martin, who was appointed CEO of Aktino this past March, about why he chose to take the helm at the up-and-coming vendor.
Martin addresses the following questions:
&bull When you made your debut at Aktino as the new CEO, you described
yourself as a “serial entrepreneur.” Tell me about that concept and what
drove you to come to Aktino?
&bull A report earlier this year from Insight Research pointed out there’s three
dominant applications for Ethernet over Copper: enterprise Ethernet
services, wireless backhaul, and DSLAM backhaul. Can you briefly touch
upon how you see copper bonding playing a role in these applications?
&bull The typical entry point for Ethernet over Fiber has been 10 Mbps. Do
you believe Ethernet over Copper can address both the needs of smaller
businesses and perhaps larger business with remote sites?
&bull With many wireless operators reportedly dipping their toes into using
Ethernet for wireless backhaul, what role do you see Ethernet over
Copper and copper bonding play in this application?
