When the editors of Telecommunications named Hammerhead as one of its Coolest Companies, Hammerhead’s recently appointed President and CEO Rob Keil -- who at the time was Hammerhead’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development -- told us that when he set out to found Hammerhead Systems, did not have an epiphany so much as a well-thought-out and evolved strategy for a contrarian play that would address the post-telecom bubble needs of the Tier 1 service provider.
In this special NXTcomm08 edition of Telecommunications' Audiocast series, Keil talks to Editor in Chief Sean Buckley about his new role and the state of the telecom market.
Keil addresses the following questions:
You were just recently appointed CEO of the company you founded.
What’s your outlook on the telecom market in 2008 and where it’s
going?
A big focus for Hammerhead’s HSX 6000 has been on the Layer 2.5
networking space. How does that vision continue to resonate with your
carrier customers and what are the key applications for this device?
Ethernet service itself continues to evolve as a sound enterprise service.
At this stage what do you believe is required to take it to the next level
of scale?
One area we can’t go without talking about is the whole Provider
Backbone Transport/Provider Backbone Bridging-Transport Engineering
(PBT/PBB-TE) versus Transport-MPLS (T-MPLS) debate, which had some
interesting news lately with BT and Verizon. Hammerhead has taken an
agnostic approach to accommodate both, but what are the true benefits
of using PBT and T-MPLS?
Outside of traditional enterprise/business class service, there’s a lot of
talk about using Ethernet for wireless backhaul. What’s your take on this
trend and how will Hammerhead fit in?
