Even though Sorrento Networks has only recently been reformed by co-founders Jim Nevelle, CEO and Tim Anderson, President and COO, the company has had a long history that actually predates the late 1990s optical boom.
Founded in 1993, Sorrento built up a sizeable portfolio of optical gear, only to be acquired by Zhone in 2004. In this special NXTcomm edition of Telecommunications' Audiocast Series, Sean Buckley, Editor in Chief, talks to Nevelle about the relaunch of the company and the future of the optical networking market.
Nevelle addresses the following questions:
Similar to some other telecom vendors (i.e., Paradyne, which was part of
AT&T and then spun out and more recently Taqua), Sorrento was
founded in the early 90s, bought by Zhone and then resurrected by the
company's two founders. What drove you to resurrect the company at
this stage?
The late 1990s saw a dramatic rise and then ultimately a crash of the
optical market. What, in your mind, are you seeing now in terms of
demand for optical gear and what’s different in 2008?
One of your more recent moves was to acquire Redfern Broadband
Networks. How does that fit into your portfolio and what drove that
acquisition?
Once nothing more than an afterthought, cellular backhaul has come to
the forefront. What’s your strategy for that market segment?
Going forward, what should we expect to see from Sorrento and the
overall optical market throughout 2008 and beyond? Are there some new
innovations we should be aware of?
