New Step refreshed

Newly appointed CEO bullish on FMC’s possibilities

If you asked Peter Vicars, the newly appointed CEO of New Step Networks, whether he would have joined the company a few years back, his reaction probably would have been pretty simple: “Had you approached me a few years back about joining the company, I would have said, Fixed Mobile Convergence you have to be kidding me—that’s nothing more than handing off calls between the fixed line and the cellular line.”

But Vicars goes on to say that the emerging advent of new applications such as social networking, presence and multi-site office support is actually making a more compelling case for FMC.

In the following Audiocast interview, Vicars talks to Editor in Chief Sean Buckley about where he wants to take New Step networks and the overall FMC market opportunity.

In this Audiocast, Vicars addresses the following questions:

There’s obviously a lot of hype and opportunity with fixed mobile convergence (FMC). While we’re seeing some interesting moves by both wireline and wireless operators in this space, what’s the state of the market as you see it now?

There are two kinds of service providers that could take advantage of FMC for their customer base. On one hand, there’s the traditional wireless service provider that wants to expand its service across other domains (i.e, WiFi, home phone service) and the fixed line operator with no wireless assets (i.e., BT or EMBARQ). How do you see FMC playing out in those two domains?

Outside of the traditional telcos, are you seeing interest from the cable operators as they start to step out of their video shell to offer enhanced residential and even business services?

No discussion of FMC is complete without mentioning IMS. With the Converged Services Node (CSN), NewStep argues that an operator can deliver new services today without having a full-blown IMS network. Are you seeing more operators embrace such a transitional strategy for IMS?

Finally, NewStep has been enhancing its executive team. The company recently appointed Shannon Bell as VP of marketing and Lloyd Williams will become VP of Architecture and Solutions. Talk about those appointments and how they will move the company forward?
