When Jeff Reedy and Prayson Pate—both former Larscom alums—sat down to found Overture Networks, there was a realization that once service providers made the move towards packet-based networks, they still had to support their cash-cow legacy network infrastructure and services. In this special “where are the hot/coolest companies now” edition of Telecommunications' Audiocast series, Sean Buckley, Editor in Chief, talks with Jeff Reedy, President and CEO of Overture Networks about the Ethernet services evolution.
In this Audiocast, Reedy addresses the following questions:
Since being named as one of our hot startups in 2004, how has Overture
Networks evolved as a company, and what do you attribute to your
staying power as an independent company?
One of the things that did stand out at the time was a recognition by
Overture that while the future was and still is IP/Ethernet services
everywhere, there’s still a well established base of TDM-based services
and infrastructure. To bridge that gap, Overture’s ISG can operate over
TDM and provide TDM services over Ethernet How has that message
resonated with the carrier community?
A key innovation of the ISG was the protected switching ring PSR
technology, which basically looks and feels like SONET without its
limitations. Talk about the significance of this development and PSR
overall and is there any effort to make it a standard?
More recently, Overture was certified by Verizon Business to be part of
its Converged Packet Architecture rollout. How important of a validation
is that for Overture Networks?
In 2004, Ethernet services were, for the most part, still in their infancy.
What do you believe is driving the adoption and growth of this segment?
