CTIA 2008: Ceterus rides the "virtual pipe"

New applications drive need for IP/Ethernet backhaul

When wireless’ main application was voice, if an operator needed more backhaul capacity, they would ring up the local telco and just provision another copper-based T1/E1 circuit. But the rise of data and video will require much higher capacity. While T1 is still clearly the dominant form of backhaul, wireless operators are continuing to examine the benefits of making a migration to IP/Ethernet-based solutions. In the following Audiocast, Sean Buckley, Editor in Chief of Telecommunications talks to Dave Stehlin, president and CEO of Ceterus Networks about the state of the wireless backhaul market segment.

In the following Audiocast, Stehlin answers these questions:

• When it comes to wireless backhaul, the two dominant forms have been either E1/T1 and TDM-based microwave solutions, but now we’re hearing more about carriers adopting or considering using IP/Ethernet for wireless backhaul. What’s driving the migration from TDM to IP/Ethernet for wireless backhaul?

• What are the measurable benefits of Ethernet solutions for backhaul applications?

• Ceterus has been a clear advocate of using not only optical technologies but also copper bonding for wireless backhaul, a market that Insight Research in forecasts will spike from US$146 million in 2008 to about $1.7 billion by 2013. What do you believe are the drivers for operators to consider bonding techniques for wireless backhaul?

• To help ease the migration pain to get to an Ethernet backhaul network, there’s been talk about scenario where an operator TDM for voice and then Ethernet for data. Are you seeing a similar trend or does it depend on the operator?

• One issue that’s gaining momentum is dealing with clock synchronization when using Ethernet for wireless backhaul. How are you addressing that issue and do you believe the two main bodies are making progress?

The M2M Switch - turning the wireless business model upside down -- September 1, 2010
While global telecom operators, systems integrators, and enterprises wrestle with Machine-to-Machine, they may struggle to contain a tide that has only just begun to rise. The power of supply chain automation, ubiquitous connectivity, and pervasive computing are so strong, we may already have traversed a threshold into a radically new paradigm in the communications industry, one in which waves of innovation, new economies of scale, and sheer business logic will prevail. While no crystal ball can show us the future of network evolution, we can revisit milestones of technological progress and shed light on the path ahead.
