Broadens backhaul portfolio with pseudowire capabilities

Wireless backhaul, once the dirty little secret of the wireless network, is coming to the forefront as wireless operators start to offer more bandwidth-hungry services such as high speed data and video. Welcome to a special edition of Telecommunications’ Audiocast series chronicling the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas. Sean Buckley, Editor in Chief of Telecommunications talks to Ralph Santitoro, Director of Carrier Ethernet Solutions Marketing for Turin Networks about how Turin is attacking new opportunities in the wireless backhaul industry segment.

• From your perspective, what are the measurable benefits to the deployment of Ethernet solutions for backhaul applications?

• Are your service provider customers starting to go beyond the kicking the tires phase for deploying IP/Ethernet backhaul solutions or does it depend on the wireless operator?

• To enhance your own wireless backhaul play, Turin recently bought the assets of Carrier Access, a company who had a wide range of wireless backhaul customers. Talk about how that acquisition is helping Turin bolster its backhaul capabilities.

• Following on the Carrier Access acquisition, Turin just introduced the product line.

Europe's largest telecom and entertainment group, Vivendi, raised its profit targets on the back of forecast-beating first-half results and reassured investors on its acquisition strategy, lifting its flagging stock.

The market for short range wireless ICs is forecast to expand this year; total shipments of Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, 802.15.4 and Wi-Fi ICs will increase approximately 20% compared to 2009. “Bluetooth ICs still lead the short-range wireless IC market,” says ABI Research industry analyst Celia Bo. “Unit shipments are expected to exceed 58% of the total short-range wireless IC shipments in 2010.

3PAR claims widespread uptake for VMware 'vSphere' service -- August 31, 2010
Today at VMworld 2010, 3PAR announced that cloud computing market leaders in the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) segments have combined the 3PAR InServ Storage Server with VMware vSphere to build cloud infrastructures for their shared, virtualized "utility" service offerings.
