CTIA 2008: IP/MPLS Forum creates wireless backhaul blueprint
MMBI initiative provides bridge to next-gen backhaul network
by Sean Buckley
As high speed wireless data and, increasingly, video services make more of a presence, the wireless operator's backhaul network has to scale to support those services effectively. And while it’s clear that operators are tuning into the possibilities that IP/Ethernet backhaul brings, they will require a blueprint to get there.
Enter the IP/MPLS Forum and its MPLS Mobile Backhaul Initiative (MMBI). In this special Audiocast edition chronicling the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas, Sean Buckley, Editor in Chief of Telecommunications Magazine, talks with David Sinicrope, Vice President of the IP/MPLS Forum and senior product manager at Redback Networks.
In this Audiocast, Scinicrope addresses the following questions:
• When it comes to wireless backhaul, the two dominant forms have been
either E1/T1 and TDM-based microwave solutions. But now we’re hearing
more about carriers adopting or considering using IP/Ethernet for wireless
backhaul. What’s driving the migration from TDM to IP/Ethernet for
wireless backhaul?
• What are the measurable benefits to the deployment of Ethernet
solutions for backhaul applications?
• To help ease the respective transition for operators and even vendors to
develop IP/Ethernet-based products for wireless backhaul, IP/MPLS
Forum has been holding its own multi-vendor mobile backhaul showcase
series at the MWC, Ethernet world Congress and now CTIA. Talk about
what you found out during the first two events and how that’s helping
the industry make this transition.
• While it’s clear that in the near-term, traditional E1/T1 circuits will be
the standard form of wireless backhaul, the future 4G wireless paths will
require more bandwidth than TDM circuit can handle. Talk about how the
MMBI is laying that blueprint for operators?
• One issue that’s gaining momentum is dealing with clock synchronization
when using Ethernet for wireless backhaul. How is IP/MPLS Forum
addressing this issue?
