Fujitsu lights up new optical flame
Focuses on the emerging packet optical networking segment
by Sean Buckley
While the optical market has seen its fair share of ups and downs in recent years, it’s clear that the demand for high speed optics is now on the rise as evidenced by new announcements by large carriers such as Verizon, which is expanding its ULH network routes in the U.S. and Europe.
In the following Audiocast interview, Editor in Chief Sean Buckley talks with Sam Lisle, director of market development at Fujitsu Network Communications about how new innovations such as IP optical networking platforms are breathing new life into the optical market.
Lisle answers the following questions:
• For better or worse, the optical market has been like a roller coaster
since the late 1990s with a lot of good ideas that often died after the
hype wore off. Do you believe the optical market today is more of a
realistic one based on real versus fictional demands?
• While it’s still a very nascent market segment, Fujitsu has been driving
the Packet ONP (packet optical network platform) concept. What are
the elements of that concept and what’s driving the need for a platform
that combines SONET, Ethernet and a ROADM into one common
platform?
• Okay, so the packet optical network concept combines the best of the
TDM and packet world. With the U.S.-based carriers in a state of
transition, how is the concept resonating with them or is it still too early?
• Since the beginning of the year, one of the newest trends to come out
has been talk about CET (Carrier Ethernet Transport), a conversation
that’s centered around two main technologies (i.e, PBB-TE and T-MPLS).
Is that something we’re going to see more of this year, and how is
Fujitsu approaching it?
• Along with the CET drive, there’s growing momentum around using
Ethernet for backhaul applications, including DSLAM and wireless traffic.
Do you see that market opportunity growing?
