EMBARQ bulks up on broadband
Maintains focus on expanding its IP-based service capabilities
by Sean Buckley
At the end of 2006, EMBARQ hit a major milestone in its broadband access strategy by signing up its one millionth broadband subscriber. Executive Editor Sean Buckley talks with Jim Hansen, Senior VP of Networks Services for EMBARQ about the service provider's broadband vision for 2008.
In this Audiocast, Hansen addresses the following questions:
At the end of 2006, EMBARQ hit a major milestone by signing up its one
millionth broadband subscriber. Now that 2007 is behind us and we’re
heading into 2008, what should we expect to see from EMBARQ on the
broadband front?
• Throughout '07, EMBARQ had made a number of enhancements including
10 Mbps download capabilities in select markets, storage and online
video services such as Video Clicks. Can you give us a feel for how those
enhancements were received by your customer base in 2007?
• In order to expand the rate and reach of the your DSL service, late last
year you talked about a focus on what you called “fundamentals” to
extend service into areas that previously you could not reach. How has
that gone and what progress has been made?
• Speaking of DSL, there are a slew of developments by the vendor and
standards community (i.e. VDSL2, pair bonding and Dynamic Spectrum
Management) that are being touted to get more juice out of that copper
line. As an ILEC with a good amount of copper in the ground, do you see
these techniques playing a role in your broadband network expansion?
• With the two largest ILECs, i.e. Verizon and AT&T, rolling out FTTC and
FTTH respectively, do you believe that’s helping to prove out the
potential business case for deep fiber access networks?
• Finally, let’s switch to the home network. No matter how much
bandwidth you have in the last mile, if the customer can’t get the right
experience in the home, the onus falls on the service provider to go out
and tie up techs to fix the problem. Will proactive monitoring of the home
network be an essential part of ensuring a good broadband customer
experience?
