Sonus rides the IP voice wave
CEO looks forward to new growth opportunities in 2008
by Sean Buckley
Joining the company in 1998, a time when the telecom industry saw a flurry of new entrants — many of which were founded right in the backyard in Massachusetts' 495 belt — Hassan Ahmed, President and CEO of Sonus Networks has led the company through an industry that has seen a number of major paradigm shifts in the past 10 years. Hassan talks with Executive Editor Sean Buckley about the evolution of Sonus and its role in the burgeoning IP communications industry.
In the Audiocast, Ahmed answers the following questions:
• Sonus was founded during a time when there was an explosion of new
startups—many of which were located in what is sometimes referred to
as the "495 technology belt" in Massachusetts. Despite the challenges of
running any technology company, what are the key ingredients to Sonus’
staying power?
• Switching to VoIP. How has this market segment evolved since you took
the reins back in 1998?
• In terms of technology trends in the VoIP arena, one that’s gained
significant momentum and hype over the past three years is IMS. Seeing
that there has been continual development by standards bodies like the
IMS forum, where do you believe we are now in the adoption cycle of
IMS?
• Along with IMS, the emergence of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC)and
the femtocell is something that Sonus has put a stake in as well through
the acquisition of the former Zynetix. Although it is still early, talk about
the evolution of these segments and how important wireless is to Sonus’
strategy?
• Finally, Sonus has seen continued growth in Europe with recent wins
including BT. To capitalize on that growth, Sonus opened new UK
headquarters. What was the driver to expand in Europe and what do you
expect to see in 2008 in this region?
