Verizon Business bulks up its IP capabilities
Expands key network routes and expands Ethernet service vision
by Sean Buckley
In 2007, Verizon Business embarked on some major network initiatives, including migrating key segments of its network to 40 Gbps, a 100 Gbps trial, and expanding the reach of its Ethernet service.
In the following Audiocast interview, Executive Editor Sean Buckley talks to Fred Briggs, Verizon Business' Executive VP of network and technology, about how the ongoing customer demands for services and bandwidth are driving the service provider to upgrade key routes of its network throughout 2008.
In the following Audiocast, Briggs answers the following questions:
• In 2007, Verizon, from a technology and network point of view, made
progress on a number of fronts. To start, can you share with us the
major highlights of 2007 and how you plan to leverage them in 2008?
• Facing increased bandwidth demands for video and other high speed
applications, Verizon updated key routes on its network to 40 Gbps. Do
you see the demand for higher speed applications making 40 Gbps more
of a reality today?
• To follow up on the 40 Gbps upgrade, Verizon also did a field trials of 100
Gbps. Were there any lessons learned from that trial you could share?
• But the highlights for '07 weren’t just about network upgrades as Verizon
also increased its availability of Ethernet services throughout the U.S. and
Europe. What is driving the increased adoption by your business
customers for Ethernet?
• Finally, Verizon completed 6,000 additional miles on its ULH network.
Similar to the movement to 40 Gbps, do you believe that new
applications will continue to drive the need for additional ULH adoption?
